The new project is designed to protect the families to the detriment of the neighbourhood and all other residents along the way.
“We need local support for our neighbourhoods but the biggest problem we are facing is the lack of funding from the Ministry of Communities and Local Government,” the project administrator, Sanyu Mohang from the Ministry of Development, said during a press conference on Sunday.
Muhanga was the first major area under the controls of the gangs and is now under threat due to development, says Maheon.
Local families complain they are given no safe house at any one time and instead it is rented out to gang members.
“The council has decided that the main focus should be on bringing down the gang hierarchy after that,” said Maheon. the new project will improve local social services including financial support to the poorest and needy.

The city is also developing the area into a hub for businesses and people living and working in Muhanga.
